As the years go by, a woman’s facial appearance changes as she ages gracefully – a wrinkle here, a fine line there – but nothing that really detracts from her overall beauty.
However, there is another part of a woman’s anatomy that can also change with age and/or pregnancy, possibly leading to self-consciousness, lack of self-esteem, and actual discomfort – namely the appearance and function of her genitalia.
What happens sometimes is that the labia minora (the inner vaginal lips) begins to protrude beyond the labia majora (the outer lips). As a result, a woman may experience reduced sexual desire, less self-confidence, discomfort with undergarments, or even pain during intercourse.
If you can relate to this problem, you should know that there are ways to not only improve the appearance of your vagina, but also restore your sexual pleasure and self-confidence.Known as vaginal labiaplasty, or vaginal rejuvenation surgery, this procedure is designed to safely reduce your external genitalia and aesthetically enhance your vaginal area.
Here’s what you should know about this life-changing procedure.
What to Expect From Vaginal Labiaplasty
Vaginal labiaplasty is a common procedure performed at Levin’s Women’s Health & Wellness Center in which the inner and/or outer vaginal lips are reshaped. It is performed by our board-certified physicians under local anesthesia, depending on the extent and complexity of the procedure.
Depending on your individual needs and circumstances, our surgeons use a wedge (tissue) excision method (removal of a triangular slice of tissue) or a linear approach (a trim technique that reduces the size of the inner labia) that preserves normal sensation while restoring a more youthful vaginal appearance. The incisions are discreetly concealed along the edge of the labia minora or along the inside of the labia majora. In addition to enhancing the appearance of the vagina, the procedure reduces the discomfort of both sexual and physical activity.
Healing and recovery from vaginal labiaplasty vary from one patient to another, and some bruising, swelling, and minor discomfort after the procedure is common. However, most patients are able to return to work and resume their usual activities within several days. Nevertheless, you should refrain from strenuous physical activity and sexual intercourse for a number of weeks after vaginal labiaplasty.
How to Tell If You’re a Candidate for Labiaplasty
The ideal candidates for vaginal rejuvenation surgery are women who:
- Have an enlarged or asymmetric inner labia
- Have had multiple vaginal deliveries and are now experiencing pain or discomfort during sex or other physical activities
- Have stretched or altered vaginas as a result of aging
- Are self-conscious about their appearance in swimwear and other types of clothing
- Are seeking a reduction in the size of their public mound
- Prefera smoother, more refined contour to their labia
Bear in mind that while vaginal rejuvenation surgery can help you regain sensation in your vagina, it is not meant to address such problems as the inability to achieve an orgasm, a low sex drive, or any other psychosexual dysfunction.
