Anatomically, the labia refer to the skin folds (or lips) around the vaginal opening. It consists of the labia majora – the outer lips – and the labia minora, the inner lips that begin at the clitoris and end under the opening of the vagina. Many women prefer labiaplasty, a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the labia, such as reducing or increasing the size of their labia or reducing any physical discomfort.
While any type of surgery can involve some manageable discomfort, one can’t help but wonder how much pain is associated with labiaplasty, given that it involves a sensitive area of the body.
Let’s talk about what you should know if you are considering this procedure and where you can go in Florida for outstanding OB/GYNs care.
A Straight-Forward and Relatively Painless Procedure
Although the genital region of the body is sensitive and delicate, labiaplasty is not a particularly painful procedure. It is performed with either a general or local anesthetic so that you will feel slight discomfort. If a patient chooses a local anesthetic, the surgery can be performed with or without sedation.
The procedure only takes about one or two hours, and once your specialist nursing team is satisfied that your initial recovery is complete, you can return home the same day as your surgery.
Of course, some mild post-operative pain is likely to occur, following labiaplasty due to some swelling, bruising, or soreness. However, the symptoms can be controlled with medication provided by your doctor, and the swelling tends to subside within the first few days or early weeks of recovery.
Another method for reducing swelling is to lay with your bottom elevated. You can also apply an ice pack over your underwear for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off.
While some residual swelling may persist longer, it doesn’t normally interfere with your daily activities, and you should be fully recovered within four to six weeks.
Supporting Recovery from Labiaplasty
To ensure faster recovery from labiaplasty, patients should do the following:
- Wear loose clothing to avoid friction and irritation of the affected area.
- Avoid exercise and rigorous activities during the recovery period.
- Abstain from sex for at least four to six weeks following surgery.
- Avoid tampons for up to six weeks. Instead, use sanitary towels for the first menstrual period after surgery.
Itching is common during the first healing week after labiaplasty. However, if the itching persists, it could indicate a yeast or bacterial infection or an allergic reaction to your prescribed medication and should be addressed by your doctor.
