Women do all sorts of things to keep themselves looking and feeling beautiful. This can include cosmetic repair of their more private areas, too.
When you give birth or get older, there is a possibility that your inner vaginal lips may protrude – making it uncomfortable to have sex and even to wear undergarments. They also don’t look as attractive as they did before.
Fortunately, there is a surgical solution for this issue: labiaplasty.
What Is a Labiaplasty?
Vaginal labiaplasty, also called vaginal rejuvenation surgery, is a procedure done to reshape the inner labia or vaginal lips – technically called the labia majora and labia minora. Some women opt to have a labiaplasty along with vaginoplasty, or tightening of the vagina.
This procedure is not recommended for girls or young women unless there is an actual deformity or injury. Women are often still physically maturing until their early 20s.
Although protruding labia are usually not a health risk, this surgery may still be done for the following reasons:
- Congenital misshaping or lack of tissue in the labia
- Protruding labia due to childbirth and age
- Pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse
- Cosmetic reasons
- Gender-reassignment surgery
What Should I Expect in a Labiaplasty?
A labiaplasty will take up to three hours. Your gynecologist will explain to you the goals and the risks of performing this surgery.
Before the procedure, your healthcare provider will give you anesthesia. Then your surgeon will remove the unnecessary tissues and reshape your labia. The physician may also remove a section of your vaginal lips.
Your doctor may use a scalpel or laser to take away the excess tissue. The surgeon will then fix the loose edges with fine, dissolvable stitches. After the surgery, you will experience some bruising and swelling, which is a typical result of any surgical procedure.
How Will This Surgery Improve My Body?
A labiaplasty will result in the following changes:
- Reduce your labia minora and labia majora around your vulva so that they do not protrude
- Make both labia symmetrical
- Shorten the labia to make it comfortable to wear undergarments or a bathing suit
- Make you feel more confident about your body
- Increase your sexual confidence
What Are the Risks of Labiaplasty?
The labiaplasty procedure comes with normal surgical risks, which can include the following:
- Excessive bleeding
- Infection
- Tissue scarring
- Nerve damage
- Blood clot in a vein
- Allergic reaction to the anesthesia
It is vital that you immediately report to your doctor any complications that you feel after having any surgery.
