Are you considering labiaplasty? You’re not alone! More and more women opt for this type of surgical procedure. In fact, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) found a 39-percent increase in labiaplasties in 2016 alone, with more than 12,000 procedures performed that year.
Women, such as those who feel self-conscious about the appearance of their vulvas, choose to undergo labiaplasty to correct perceived flaws. But what exactly is labiaplasty, and who is a good candidate for it? Keep reading to find out more.
Is Labiaplasty Right for You?
Labiaplasty is designed to effectively decrease the size of the labia minora and/or labia majora, offering many women relief from both the physical and emotional impact of an enlarged labia. Also known as labial rejuvenation, labiaplasty is often confused with vaginal rejuvenation, which is a more intensive surgical procedure specifically intended to address sexual dysfunction. In contrast, labiaplasty is a quick, relatively painless procedure.
To carry out the procedure, a gynecological surgeon uses a technique, possibly one that involves creating incisions along the edge of the inner labia or along the inside of the outer labia. The goal is to preserve normal sensation while restoring a more youthful vaginal appearance.
The healing process and recovery period of labiaplasty varies from patient to patient. It is only natural to experience some bruising, swelling, and minor discomfort; bed rest is typically recommended. While it is advisable to refrain from strenuous activity and sexual intercourse for several weeks after the procedure, most patients can return to work or resume their normal activities in just three to seven days.
Although there are some exceptions made for patients younger than 18 who have significant irregularities, labiaplasty is intended for adult women who:
- Are self-conscious about their labial size or appearance
- Experience physical discomfort while sitting, exercising, or engaging in sexual activity
- Have labial tears as a result of childbirth
The procedure is not recommended for women with the following conditions or circumstances:
- Active vaginal infection or malignancy
- Unwillingness to quit smoking
- Conditions that can affect wound healing
- Unrealistic functional or aesthetic goals
