Vaginal reconstruction surgery, also known as vaginoplasty, is becoming an increasingly popular procedure for women to have following childbirth. Its purpose is to repair and tighten the vaginal muscles and tissues that were overstretched or damaged as a result of childbirth. Vaginoplasty reinstates strength, tone, and control of the vaginal muscles.
Childbirth can cause trauma to the vagina. Vaginal stretching can cause a number of problems including stress incontinence (the involuntary loss of urine when coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercising, or heavy lifting), sexual dissatisfaction, and self-consciousness relating to the look and feel of the vagina. Any scarring or distortion caused by childbirth may result in reduced sensitivity or pain during sexual intercourse.
What’s Involved in a Vaginoplasty Procedure
A vaginoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis and under anesthetic so no pain is felt. It is a relatively straightforward procedure that takes around an hour to perform.
During the surgery, your surgeon will fasten and shorten the muscles at the back of the vagina and remove any excess tissue, thereby resulting in a tighter vaginal canal. Dissolvable stitches are used, meaning they do not need to be removed at a later date – and any scarring is inside the vagina and not visible.
How Is a Labiaplasty Different from a Vaginoplasty?
A labiaplasty is another type of vaginal rejuvenation procedure. It is performed to change the size or shape of the labia minora (the inner folds of skin surrounding the vulva). Childbirth can cause the labia to become damaged such as through tearing or stretching.
Damaged or stretched labia can cause discomfort or can interfere with certain activities, such as sports, exercise, sex, or even when wearing certain clothing. A labiaplasty involves surgically reshaping the labia and removing excess skin to make it more aesthetically pleasing and more comfortable.

What Are the Risks?
As with any type of surgical procedure, there can be potential risks and side effects involved with a vaginoplasty. They can include:
- Infection
- Loss of sensation
- Scarring
- Bleeding
These risks may be increased in patients who smoke, are overweight, or have diabetes or other health conditions.
