There are certain medical issues that only affect women. A women’s health clinic is therefore dedicated to providing health and wellness services to women, and this type of clinic is staffed by OB/GYN physicians and wellness specialists. Reproductive health issues are among the biggest concerns that are addressed at these medical centers.
There are many procedures commonly performed at these clinics, ranging from gynecologic and obstetric to cosmetic. Let’s talk about the common procedures women get at a women’s health clinic and who provides these medical services near you.
Gynecological Procedures
A women’s health clinic offers gynecological services that include diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of gynecological conditions, such as painful periods, endometriosis, vaginal infections, and infertility, to name a few. The most common procedure is your annual Pap smear to check for precancerous or cancerous cells.
If a Pap smear detects potentially abnormal results, your OB/GYN will likely perform a colposcopy. This is used to closely examine your vagina, cervix, and vulva for any cancerous lesions. A loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) is used to remove abnormal growths in the cervix, to be sent to the laboratory for further examination.
Other gynecological procedures include manual breast exams at your annual OB/GYN visit. You will also have a urinalysis and possibly also blood tests if necessary.
For women who are diagnosed with endometrial cancer, uterine cancer, or ovarian cancer, a laparoscopic hysterectomy may be performed. This is done to remove the cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, and/or ovaries.
Obstetrics Services
Of course, women’s health clinics provide care and support for women before, during, and after pregnancy – including the childbirth process itself. Common obstetric services include fertility services, pregnancy testing, prenatal care (including high-risk pregnancy care), ultrasound, and vaginal or C-section delivery.
Cosmetic Facial and Vaginal Procedures
After childbearing or as a natural part of aging, a woman may experience changes in her face and body that affect her self-confidence. Some women’s health clinics offer cosmetic procedures, such as Botox and Juvederm.
These medical practices may also provide cosmetic vaginal rejuvenation surgeries. A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure performed to alter the labia minora and to trim the excess skin. A vaginoplasty is performed to tighten the vagina that has become loose from childbirth.
Women’s Wellness Services
A women’s health clinic may also offer wellness services, from vitamin therapy to nutrition and individualized weight-loss programs. Women’s health clinics that offer comprehensive services are in a better position to help you be as healthy as possible.
