A labiaplasty or labial reduction surgery is a procedure performed to alter the appearance of the labia minora. The labia minora is the inside of the vaginal lip. A woman’s labia minora undergoes changes throughout life, especially after a pregnancy. For many women, the physical appearance of the labia can affect confidence. Which is why surgery is an excellent solution.
In a vaginal labiaplasty, the surgeon can make changes to the labia minora, according to the patient’s desire. Every year, more and more women are seeking a labiaplasty, which is a quick surgical procedure that can be completed in an outpatient setting.
If you are interested in the procedure, you may be wondering what recovery from a labiaplasty is like. Here’s generally what to expect with a normal recovery process.
Recovery from Labiaplasty
It’s normal to experience pain for a few days after a labiaplasty. Your surgeon will prescribe medication to relieve the pain. You should also expect swelling in the area as your body heals. The best thing you can do to accelerate your healing is rest. If you can, try to avoid getting up and walking a lot for the first few days after the procedure.
A week after surgery, the pain will have subsided significantly, and you may not even need pain medication anymore. There may still be swelling and bruising, but after several days, it will subside enough so you can return to work, provided that the work you do is not physically demanding.
One week after surgery, your incision will be in the healing process. You may experience itchiness in the area, which is normal. Make sure not to scratch the area as it can lead to infection. A cold compress can help relieve the itchiness.
Three weeks after surgery, the stitches will have been dissolved. By this time, you should be able to perform light exercises, however, you should still refrain from sexual and strenuous activities until 6 weeks after surgery. Tampon use may be approved by your doctor.
Is Labiaplasty Right For You?
Being of reasonably good health is a requirement for any woman who wants to undergo a labiaplasty. However, not every woman of reasonably good health will be suitable for the procedure. It’s important to discuss what your end goals are with an experienced surgeon to find out if a labiaplasty can get you the results you want.
