As women age and go through different milestones in life, such as childbirth, it’s normal to experience changes in the structures of different body parts. One example is the loosening of the vagina. Aging and natural childbirth are the two most common causes of vaginal structural changes, specifically the loosening of the vaginal canal. As a result, you may feel less sexual pleasure or have lower sexual self-esteem.
Fortunately, a vaginoplasty can fix this issue. This cosmetic procedure involves revitalizing the vagina to tighten it. As a result of this procedure, you can once again have a tighter vaginal canal.
If you are new to this procedure, you probably have a lot of questions. Below are the most common questions asked about vaginoplasty. If you are interested in learning more about how this procedure can improve your intimate area, talk to a gynecologist with surgical experience.
What does a vaginoplasty do?
A vaginoplasty tightens the vagina which may have loosened and become misshapen due to aging and natural childbirth. It is a cosmetic surgical procedure that involves removing excess tissue from the back side of the vagina and tightening vaginal muscles to reduce the size of the vaginal canal.
This procedure is best for women who are done having children and are having less sexual pleasure or self-esteem issues because of the way their vagina is structured. A gynecologist with surgical experience can assess whether you are a good candidate for this procedure through a physical exam.
What is the difference between a vaginoplasty and a labiaplasty?
Some people confused a vaginoplasty with a labiaplasty. A labiaplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure that alters the labia minora or the inner folds of skin around the vulva. It does not give you the same results as a vaginoplasty. Both are cosmetic procedures that can improve your aesthetic appearance, however, a vaginoplasty improves the size of the vaginal canal, while a labiaplasty exclusively reduces the size of the labia minora, located external to the vagina. Depending on your needs and desire, you may be able to have both of these procedures done at the same time.
What does recovery look like after a vaginoplasty?
A vaginoplasty is an outpatient procedure often performed in as little as a few hours at a surgery center. You return home the same day as the procedure and will be required to rest in bed for the first couple of days. It is normal to experience soreness, discomfort, and minor pain following the procedure.
A vaginoplasty does not require extensive time off work. Most women are able to return to work in about a week after the procedure. However, you will be required to refrain from sexual activities and strenuous exercise for several weeks until you completely heal.
